YOGA FOR OVERALL HEALTH AND WELLNESS with Aras Baskauskas

ABOUT DVD:

Aras Baskauskas stresses that contrary to popular belief, yoga is much more than just bending and twisting the body into pretzel-like forms. It is a practice that promotes overall health and helps us to generate compassion, awareness and equanimity.

The focus of Aras’ routine is on the more down-to-earth benefits of yoga, including:

  • Improved physical fitness
  • Mental clarity
  • Stress control
  • General well being

BONUS FEATURE:

Aras demonstrates 10 minutes of power yoga exercises for the days when you need a good workout in a short period of time. This quick and efficient segment is excellent for strengthening the entire body with maximum results.

ABOUT ARAS:
Aras Baskauskas, pronounced (bush-cow-kiss), is best known as the winner of CBS’s Survivor: Exile Island. While on the hit reality series, America became fascinated with this handsome yogi and his love of the ancient practice of yoga.

Baskauskas admits he hated yoga when he first tried it because he couldn’t touch his toes. However, at this point in his life he was open to an even bigger challenge - acceptance of self. Aras learned, “To get the most out of yoga wasn’t about flexibility, it was about working at your honest reality – only through that presence you can grow. But you can’t grow unless you are honest with where you are. Accepting your limitations and working within those places on yourself is how Aras says he learned the tools to deal with life’s ups and downs.”

Equally athletic and intelligent, Aras received a scholarship to UC Irvine captaining the University Division 1 Men’s Basketball Team, while receiving his MBA at the prestigious Paul Merage School of Business.

Aras studied Warrior Yoga under the mentorship of Nzazi Malonga in the past and is currently continuing his yoga education in Hatha yoga as well as Zen yoga under the tutelage of George Falcon and Don Rossmore. He instructs classes regularly in Santa Monica, California and teaches a yoga potluck once a month that is free to the public.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM, SPECIAL NEEDS & TYPICAL with Britt Collins

A 2007 Centers for Disease Control report found that 1 in 150 children in America today have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many of these children also experience Sensory Dysfunction, also known as Sensory Integration Disorder. Occupational Therapy can make a significant difference in a child’s life.

The goal of Occupational Therapy is to equip the child with life skills that will be used in their every day living.

ABOUT DVD:

This DVD introduces parents to Occupational Therapy (OT) and what it can do for a child who has difficulties with organization of behavior and/or Sensory Dysfunction. Occupational Therapist, Britt Collins, combines traditional Occupation Therapy exercises with Applied Behavior Analysis to teach parents and caregivers various skills which can assist in desensitizing a child and help them on the path to reprogramming their brain function. Britt guides us through this program in both clinical and easy to follow terms. She also provides families with a guideline on how to integrate “sensory diets” into their home.

This program includes:

  • gravitational insecurity
  • motor planning
  • vestibular dysfunction
  • proprioception dysfunction
  • tactile dysfunction
  • visual motor
  • oral motor
  • organization of behavior

ABOUT BRITT:
Britt graduated from Colorado State University with a Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy. She has practiced in a variety of settings including, Sensory Integration clinics, schools, homes, rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities. Britt honed her Occupational Therapist skills at Therapy in Action Pediatric Clinic in Tarzana, California. She currently works for PediaStaff in the Battle Ground, Washington school district where she overseas three schools (2 elementary schools, 1 middle school).

Britt has mainly focused her career as an OT on Sensory Integration and how this affects children with various special needs, such as autism, ADHD, Sensory Dysfunction and more. Previous to her graduate studies, Britt worked as a Behavior Consultant in Colorado for four years. She worked with a diverse group of children with behavioral needs, implementing programs into the homes, schools and community. Working through Applied Behavior Analysis has given her an increased prospective on how children with behavior “issues” strive to have organization in their lives.

ABOUT US:
Our son, Odin, who has an Autism diagnoses, refused to eat most foods. He put his head on the ground to play with toys. He couldn’t wear anything with tags and putting on socks was pure torture. He didn’t jump up and got car sick whenever we tried to drive anywhere. At three years old, he still wasn’t talking and he had extreme social anxiety. We didn’t know what to do until a friend recommended we have him evaluated by an Occupational Therapist. They said he might be suffering from Sensory Integration Dysfunction. It turned out, he did.

Working with an OT has made a tremendous difference in our son’s life and ours as well. Britt gave us tools to use in our home and taught us how to participate in our son’s road to wellness. We felt that there were other parents of Autistic and Special Needs children who could benefit from the exercises and techniques we learned, so we decided to use our background in filmmaking to produce this DVD. It is our hope that this DVD will help your child overcome, or at least manage, Sensory Dysfunction and help you as parents and caregivers to take an active part in your child’s intervention.
